Erika Schaefer is #goals. The luxury realtor is a boss babe that has come a long way, all while dressing flawlessly. Seriously, this girl has beauty, brains and a kick a** style.
Our editor Staci Wuokko was able to catch up with Erika to see how she got to where she is today, and how she does it all while still looking stylish and gorgeous.
Staci Wuokko: You weren’t always a realtor, can you give us a little info on your background and how you got to where you are today?
Erika Schaefer: I, like many who move to Los Angeles, wanted to be in the entertainment industry. I was on a few television shows then shifted from acting to entertainment host and landed gigs with E! News and Young Hollywood interviewing celebrities. After the glam of that wore off, I decided I wanted to pursue a career that was flexible, exciting, and there was no cap on my yearly salary. I reached out to the top 10 female realtors via email and landed a job with a woman named Joyce Rey who is one of the top producing female agents in Beverly Hills. Thankfully, she took a chance on me and hired me as her assistant.
SW: Obsessed with that kind of attitude and move in life. We loved that Million Dollar Listing FINALLY featured some bad ass women like you and Tracy, were you excited to have that girl power on the show?
ES: Tracy is hands down the epitome of a female bad ass. To be able to work with her on a daily basis is incredible. Then to be able to shoot a show with her is just icing on the cake. I like how MDL showcases Tracy and I’s work relationship. Women supporting women is extremely important in my opinion.
SW: We are such big believers on women supporting women! Erika Schaefer and Tracy Tutor Maltas!? That’s one killer combo. On top of having a good mentor, being a realtor takes a lot of ambition. Where do you get the drive from?
ES: Growing up I was always starting side businesses. I wanted to work from the time I was little. I think you either have that drive and grit or you don’t. It can’t be taught it’s something inside of you that says “I’m destined for greatness.”
What’s it like working with Tracy?
ES: It’s a blast! I’m excited everyday to get up and go to work. Yes, we have very hectic days but we work really well together and just get one another. She has been such an amazing mentor to me.
SW: That being said, let’s get real. How do you keep calm in what can be a super stressful career?
ES: I attend church twice a week. It’s important for me to regroup and refuel.
SW: Love it. We all need that outlet of letting go and taking a break. Negotiation is everything in this business! Any advice for the skill for our boss babes out there?
ES: Negotiating used to make me feel uncomfortable – like a used car salesman but once you see it as an art form it’s actually very empowering. Confidence is key! You have to know what you’re talking about and own it.
SW: Any tips on going after what you want within the work place?
ES: Again confidence! I also believe taking risks is key. Many people like to play it safe but you blink and 5 years has passed you by- you’re in the same position making the same amount of money and not feeling challenged. Have the courage to ask for that promotion, speak up and share that great idea, don’t let fear get the best of you.
SW: Do you have a favorite boss babe book?
ES: The Subtle Art of not giving a *uck is a good one. Many people now a days care so much about what others think of them whether it’s in the work place or in our day to day lives. This book is a reminder that you only have one life so live it the way you choose!
SW: That book is unreal and amazing, I totally get it. Being a woman on the go, can you tell us what we’d find in your purse right now?
ES: At least 3 different chapsticks – it’s an addiction, perfume, lotion, cash and a few business cards.
SW: Chapstick addiction is def a thing we suffer from, too. Your beauty is perfect, we need to know your secrets! What are your go-to’s when it comes to skincare?
ES: It wasn’t until my mid 20’s that I realized taking care of my skin was so important. I always take my makeup off before bed regardless of how tired I am. Sunscreen is a must! I love Murad’s Oil Free Sunscreen SPF 30. I slather it all over my face, neck, and chest! I also use Mario Badescu’s Rosewater facial spray religiously throughout the day.
SW: When you live in LA, sunscreen is a must! We love visiting that city. What are some of your favorite places for dinner with your girls?
ES: I like smaller more intimate places. A few of my favorites are Nice Guy, The Little Door, and Pace.
SW: Your outfit game is always killing it! Where do you get inspiration from when dressing yourself and how would you describe your style?
ES: Thank you! My style is kind of all over the place. Sometimes I like being super girly and flirty but for the most part I like clothes that I’m comfortable in. I love a good jean with a leather jacket and booties. To elevate a look I’ll choose a good shoe or bag.
SW: Alright, to round things up, we can end on a fun note of this … or that.
