Love Can Go the (Long) Distance

Valentine’s Day can be a lovely time of the year for couples who get to spend the day together.  However, it can also serve bittersweet for couples who may be too far apart to meet up for a date.  I get it, life happens; different colleges, different jobs and different life situations can get in the way of physically being together. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still have a romantic day with your special someone. Keep reading for a few ideas to get the ball rolling for your long distance Valentine’s Day.

1. Letters: Letters are a classic way to show someone that you care about them. Although we exist in a digital age where texting is super easy, that extra step of prior planning can really show your partner that you care. Go to your local craft store, buy some cute stationery and a pink pen, and put your feelings on the paper. You could even write a poem for the ultimate romantic gesture. While you’re sending your letter through the mail, you can take it a step further.

2. Gifts: Everybody likes gifts, right? You can still give your partner gifts even if you can’t place it right into their hand. To make your gift more intimate, give it a personal touch. Have their favorite flower or fruit bouquet delivered right to them. Create a scrapbook of your favorite memories. Give them a heart-shaped locket with a picture of you together. A gift that is more than just a price tag will stand out to them.

3. Shared Activities: Just because you can’t be in the same room doesn’t mean you can’t be doing the same thing. Agree on activities for a date night, set aside some personal time for you and your boo, and enjoy the evening “together.” You can both order from the same restaurant, pick a movie and press play at exactly the same time, or listen to the same playlist of songs that remind you of each other.  Doing the same things will make you feel like you’re together, but the next point will be the staple.

4. Log On: The closest thing to face-to-face interaction we have in the digital age is video chat.  Whether it’s through Skype, OoVoo, or Facetime, you can call your partner up through your phone or computer and get the illusion of actually being near each other.  You might not be able to touch them, but you can still look into their eyes, see their smile, and enjoy hearing their laugh.  Tell them how much you care about them and watch their reaction.  Talk all night until the sun comes up.

Just because you and your partner are physically apart, doesn’t mean your hearts can’t still be together. A little effort and creativity can go a long way in showing that special someone that you care. I hope these tips help you both enjoy your Valentine’s Day!
