In an action that is beyond overdue, MTV has announced Rihanna, the queen of literally everything, will be the 2016 recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Rihanna joins icons such as Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake and Kanye West on the list of exclusive honorees. Although the Vanguard Award is certainly not new, only 8 awards have been handed out since 2000, making this an incredibly big deal and well deserved honor. Furthermore, as a woman of color, Rihanna joins winners Beyonce (2014) and Janet Jackson (1990) in a very exclusive recipient club, made up entirely of #BlackGirlMagic.
In more recent Vanguard fashion, Riri will also bless viewers with a performance during the show. However, our girl can be unpredictable so if she stops the show to announce her bid to serve as Kanye’s VP in 2020, we already know what ticket we’re voting for in four years. In addition to her honor, she’s also snagged four VMA nods, this year, for both “Work” and “This is What You Came For.”
Because Rihanna is so iconic, MTV is hosting the VMAs at the (almost) equally iconic Madison Square Garden, for the first time in the history of the awards ceremony. The show will air live on Sunday, August 28 at 9 p.m. E.T./P.T. so #Navy, prepare yourselves now. We guarantee this is one show you will not want to miss!
